| SIMPLE DRAWING AT IMAGE MAGICK |
|
These directions work for MSN TV users only. Computer users will need to find tutorials written for them.
For this tutorial, we are using Arbor IM.
Start with a plain background of your choice. Make your own, following the directions in this column from May or use another one. For these examples we'll use a white background, 200x40. After you have your background onscreen at IM, click on "Draw" tab at top of the page.
- Primitive: "line" is already there.
- Coordinates: delete those numbers and type these (leave a space between the 2 sets of numbers):
+10+10 +190+10
- First set of numbers: start of line:
+10+10 means 10 pixels in from left side; 10 pixels down from top.
Second set of numbers: end of line: +190+10 means 190 pixels over from the left; 10 pixels down from the top.
- Fill Color: delete "white" and leave blank.
- Stroke Color: use either a hex code such as #000066 (no quotes), or a color name.
- Stroke Width: use 1, 2, 3 or higher. The higher the number, the thicker (wider) the line. Leave everything else as is.
- Click on Draw.
USING LINES AS DECORATION, by FLO:
Below are some ideas for using lines to make decorative borders and corners for images:
Hint: Draw 2-3 lines in one corner. Write down the numbers. Then use "Transform" and either "flip" and "flop" or "rotate left (right)." Then click on "Draw" again and do the same 2-3 lines in a different corner.
SQUARES & RECTANGLES, by BECKY:
- Once you have uploaded your image and clicked on "View", click on the "Draw" tab, located at the top of the page. I will be using an image that is 221x221.
- Click on the "Primitive" button and choose "Rectangle"
- First set of coordinates: tells you how far from the left edge and how far down from the top you want your line.
Second set: tells you how far from the right edge and how far down the image you want your line to end.
+10+10 +60+60
- The image is 221x221, so, to make the lines even at all four corners, subtract the first coordinates from the width and height of the image
+10+10 +211+211
Delete the "Fill Color" and in the "stroke Color", put your desired color for your rectangle. Enter how wide you want your line to be in the "Stroke Width" box, 1, 2, 3, etc. I chose "5".
- Click on "Draw" and the results will be on the next screen. If the results are not what you desire, you can hit your "back button" and "reset" and start over.
You can add more rectangles by clicking on the "Draw" tab and changing the coordinates.
- When you are finished, click on the "Output tab. In the "Format" box, select the type of output image. Select jpg or jpeg or leave as a .gif. Click. Move cursor down to "Storage Type" and click on "single file." Click on "output."
- TL in the spaces provided or else click on the thumbnail image. This will then show you the full sized image. Use your "Go To" key and select "Show Current." Copy the URL that appears and paste it into your File Manager.
USING RECTANGLES AS DECORATION by BECKY:
Below is an idea for using RECTANGLES to make decorative borders and corners for images:
Hint: to make the squares in the 4 corners, first make the square in the upper left corner. Then go to Transform, Flip. Click on Draw again and use the same coordinates as before. Then to Transform, Flop. Repeat the Draw. Transform again, Flip and repeat Draw. Do a final Transform, Flop. The image will now have 4 decorated corners and also has landed right side up. Doig it this way saves having to figure out new coordinates for the other 3 corners.

Below are some ideas from Jean (lnjweaver), Becky (crabbytabby1), and Flo (tonebytone) for using LINES as decorative borders:
- Jean's Dragon Duel - She has used LINES to border 3 of the 4 corners of this black & white image.
- Becky's Fairy - Two corners inside the frame are decorated with LINES.
- Flo's Maple Twigs - After adding a wide black border ("Decorate" tab at IM), she made the top and bottom "bars" plus the top "strings" with LINES.

Below are some ideas from Jean (lnjweaver), Becky (crabbytabby1), and Flo (tonebytone) for using RECTANGLES as decorative borders:
- Jean's Warrior - She probably added a wide black border ("Decorate" tab at IM), then used several same-sized but overlapping RECTANGLES for the image border.
- Becky's The View - Here she used 4 rectangles, one inside the other and varied the stroke widths.
- Flo's Lilacs - She used 2 thin purple RECTANGLES to decorate the image inside the border.

EXAMPLES: LINES & RECTANGLES COMBINED
Ideas from Jean (lnjweaver), Becky (crabbytabby1), and Flo (tonebytone) for combining LINES and RECTANGLES as decorative borders:
- Jean's Tree of Life - Jean probably added a wide white border (Decorate at IM), then used several RECTANGLES around the image and then LINES to further decorate 2 of the corners.
- Becky's Waiting - A RECTANGLE shows immediately inside the "frame." LINES decorate two corners.
- Flo's Violets 2 - Try finding a RECTANGLE right around the edge of the whole image. The high-lighted upper and left edges of the inner image are LINES, as are the shadows along the right and lower edges.
So you see, Draw with LINES and/or RECTANGLES as decorative borders or other decorations within images can be obvious or subtle. You are limited only by your imagination.
